How to Apply for a Credit Card

When you are applying for a credit card, there are many things you will have to consider before choosing one that fits your needs. During times like this, when the economy causes fluctuating interest rates, it is important to make sure that you don’t get caught in the whole web of debt along with the rest. Here are a few tips on how to apply for a credit card prudently:

  • Look at your own finances and find out if your income can accommodate a credit card. Remember that owning a credit card opens you up to a lot of temptations to do unlimited shopping. Always make sure you are planning to get a credit card for the right reasons, which is for emergencies.
  • Do your research and find out more about credit card plans being offered by different banks and companies. Many of them may have some great introductory offers. Learn more about what those introductory offers cover and for how long a period they last.
  • Find out more about the interest rates, credit limits, annual percentage rate (APR), penalty costs, grace periods, due dates, special offers for different kinds of customers, as well as possibilities for balance transfers. By knowing more about the costs, fees, and possible programs that you can join, at least you know you have a better decision making process that is informed and complete in its research.
  • Choose one card and fill out the application. It is up to you how you do the application, whatever is most comfortable for you will be the best way. You can do an online application, but if you are uncomfortable inputting your information online, then filling out a paper application and mailing it would be the next best option. You could even stop by a bank and have someone there assist you if you are not sure about some questions.
  • Make sure you are complete in the documentary requirements that you have to submit. This may include the appropriate government identification cards, social security number, proof of billing address, driver’s license, and other relevant paperwork that they may request. Always make sure you have 2 or 3 photocopied versions and never send in originals.

Once you get your credit card, make sure that you manage it prudently and reasonably. Try not to lose your head during shopping sprees and keep in mind that the higher your debt is the higher the amount of interest you will pay on it. Also remember that the money you are using to buy things with your card is not yours. You are merely making a debt to buy things that you will pay for later with a high interest charge.
